The Donald started reasonably well. How we cheered when he gave DEI a good bashing, then talked tough on Canada and Mexico, getting them to take border security seriously without having to carry out his threat of monstrous tariffs.
Then came his suggestion for Gaza, which was more controversial. To me, however, and more importantly to my contacts in Gaza City, it was a breath of fresh air, coming after more than four decades of slavish devotion to the two-state solution which had led only to blood and tears.
But Ukraine? This was whacko. Those Trump detractors who closed their minds to him from the off will be crowing “I told you so” from the rooftops. But even those of us who allowed for his qualities have been left clutching our heads in bewilderment.
